Thirty-four miles south of New York City, with a population of 1070 permanent residents (2000 Census), Deal, New Jersey, located in Monmouth County, was named after the town of Deale, Kent County in England by Thomas Whyte, a carpenter who purchased a large amount of land along the coastal area that was then known as Shrewsbury Township in 1670.
A farming and fishing area until the late 1800’s, most of the land had been purchased by developers in the early 1900’s. Now only 1.2 square miles in area, the attraction and charm of Deal lies in its beautiful, well-kept mansions. Visitors to the Deal region enjoy wide ocean beaches and the lovely architecture that characterizes this stretch of shoreline. Vacationers and day-trippers should head to Conover Pavilion where showers, a playground and a snack bar are available.
The Borough of deal was incorporated in 1898 from portions of Ocean Township, New Jersey. Deal is also unique because it boasts the largest percentage of population of Syrian Americans in any U.S. municipality. 16.4% of the population was identified in the 2000 Census as
Orthodox Sephardic Jews, and the summertime population of the community grows to a population of over 6,000 people, and many of the summer visitors are members of the faith.
